Glitter and Doom Live: The Orpheum Theatre 2008 (2008-06-17: The Orpheum Theatre, Phoenix, AZ, USA)
~ Release by Tom Waits (see all versions of this release, 2 available)
Annotation
This release chronicles the first night of the Glitter & Doom tour, which started in June 2008. This is an audience recording, but extremely professional and listenable throughout. Waits' rendition of "Jesus Gonna Be Here" on this night is a unique version, performed to the tune of Ray Charles and the Raelettes' rendition of "You Are My Sunshine."
This tour introduced Ticketmaster's paperless ticketing system, making this a complete recording of history's first digitally ticketed concert.
Recorder's notes:
"Here's yesterday's opening night of the "Glitter and Doom" tour, which saw Tom Waits in fine form indeed. I can't say enough about the show, which was every bit as outstanding as that set list up there suggests. As for the recording, it came out half-decent, and though you should check the sample below to decide for yourself, I doubt you'll find yourself regretting the download.
It was my first time in Phoenix - great town, incidentally - and my first time seeing Waits in almost a decade. It was also my first time using these mics, and they sound fantastic though the levels turned out a tad low. I was tempted to try to boost them before upping this, but in the end I decided to leave that to people more knowledgeable about those things than me. There are a couple of annoying aspects of the tape - a guy who decided to talk to me in the middle of "Black Market Baby," a woman nearby who had to be ejected and didn't exactly go quietly, as well as a couple who, bafflingly, had decided to bring their three-year-old to the show and weren't always successful in convincing her to pipe down. But it's a very enjoyable listen nonetheless. Looking forward to hearing more shows from the tour upped here in the future!"
