Twisted Metal

“Twisted Metal” is a track by The Dead Broken Heart. The concept originated during the creation of a series of highway and road field recordings made by the project, with development taking place during recording sessions at an underpass on Interstate 95.

According to staff members involved in assisting Kareem Jacobs with field recording work, Jacobs placed a microphone near the roadway while seated beneath the underpass. During the session, he programmed a rhythm using a BOSS DR-220 and incorporated recorded traffic sounds into the composition. The resulting track has been described as featuring metallic, glitch-based, and rhythmically chaotic elements.

Jacobs has described the traffic recordings as evoking individuals in continuous motion without a defined destination, a concept he referred to as “aimless traveling.” He has stated that he views this condition as often remaining unnoticed until disrupted by a significant external event.

Graphic designer Alejandro Del Valle has stated that the track may be interpreted as being performed from the perspective of an observer positioned beside the roadway attempting to gain the attention of passing drivers. He further described the work as conveying a warning regarding unreflective movement through life, referencing the lyric “brakes for God’s sake, you’re going the wrong way.”

A press release issued by P&B Fortezza Sound Ventures described “Twisted Metal” as a metaphor for individuals who move through life without recognizing the value of their surroundings while pursuing externally imposed goals, noting that this may lead to regret and a desire to revisit previously overlooked experiences.
