Hit Mix (e-kara series, for european markets)
~ Release group series
Annotation
A strange and seemingly obvious title for the series, but these are the common title for these cartridges.
e-Kara was a device, although could be considered a toy (as it was mainly aimed towards children), that allowed for a simple and easy karaoke experience. The general setup would be that you'd buy an e-kara device (which came in different form factors, but most commonly as a microphone) which you would then plug into your TV for both audio and video. You would then insert one of the below cartridges, and power the system up to be greeted with a relatively simple UI to select a track. Once a track was selected the lyrics would appear on screen, and become highlighted as the track progressed. All tracks on the cartridge (regardless of region) were digital reproductions, similar to MIDI but many believe to be using sampled instruments. There were no vocal guides strictly speaking, but often an instrument would be carrying the tempo of the track. The visuals were often seemingly random stock images (typical of cheap traditional CD+G albums), however some later releases do have slightly improved graphics. Options for the karaoke experience were limited and included various echo/reverb options, voice changers, along with tempo and key options.
A video released in late June 2024 by British YouTuber Techmoan which gives examples of both the original Japanese releases and the western releases along with an overview of the whole e-kara experience.
The series have been broken down into the following so far:
- Karaoke Cartridge; which are a series of cartridges released for the North American markets. These obviously contain karaoke recordings of some of the most popular pop tracks of 2001/2002, along with some popular classic karaoke tracks as well.
- Hit Mix; the e-kara was also released in Europe and these cartridges appear to be relatively the same as those provided in the Karaoke Cartridge series with some tracks making appearances in both series. These have been identified as being for the European market due to the inclusion of instructions in a wide variety of European languages (British English, French, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish).
- A so far unnamed "J-Pop" series of which seemed to be the most popular and was, as you'd expect, for the Japanese market only.
Submission Progress:
So far I am adding entries with information I can gleam from eBay/Yahoo! Acution listings. I will always try and choose listings where the image is clear/high resolution enough to read accurately. None of the information submitted will be sourced from item descriptions but instead from the photographs provided (for accuracy).
If any of these images are suitable to be added to the CAA then I will duly add them.
As I am currently without an e-Kara unit it is not possible for me to provide any information around durations, nor am I able to try and take direct audio recordings from the device to generate fingerprints.
If you do have access to an e-Kara device and have the ability to add these details please contribute that information.
