◄| The Horror Of Beauty / Press Quotes |►

"My Ruin is the rawest expression of musical catharsis ever witnessed."

- Joshua Sindell | Kerrang!

"This band, for all it's darkhearted aggression is purporting positive and empowering messages, particularly for young women who yearn to break away from mainstream music & mainstream attitudes toward females."

- Outburn Magazine

"This much anticipated album is certain the lay all the rumours to rest about what My Ruin are capable of. They're back on the warpath, promising to take no prisoners with their uncompromising hooks and visceral lyrics."

- Virgin Megastore U.K.

"Before she began spewing pure rock fury in the Los Angeles quartet My Ruin, frontwoman Tairrie B was championed by N.W.A's Eazy E as a feminist rapper and in the band Manhole. Miss B started My Ruin as a solo project in 1999 and enlisted guitarist Mick Murphy, bassist Meghan Mattox & drummer Yael the following year. My Ruin signed to Century Media Records in 2003 and sunsequently recorded the EP 'The Shape of Things to Come" and full-length 'The Horror of Beauty'. There's no rap rock here. Instead, the band channels Pantera's anger, Motorhead's swagger, and Black Sabbath's sludge, spitting out churlish riffs that hit as hard as an amped-up-ape. Tairrie B rails against our beauty obsessed pop culture with a snarl that would tear the siding off a house."

- Jeff Perlah | Revolver Magazine

"There's just no holding Tairrie B back - the bitch has returned and this time she's really angry. 'The Horror of Beauty' is Miss B's two-fingered salute to Hollywood's perfection, the music industry and just about anyone who's ever spited her. The bloody assault is a far cry from her previous work with Tura Satana and Manhole, which sounds almost commercial in comparison; she screams, she spits, she snarls her way through 14 new tracks, including a cover of the ultimate Riot Grrl anthem ;Rid Of Me' originally performed by that other woman of angst-filled modern rock, Polly Jean Harvey. Despite all that screaming, the songs are actually very melodic. The aural partnership between Mick Murphy's doom-driven guitar licks and Yael's dirge-like drums take the edge off Tairrie's raw vocals, To call this album dark would e an understatement, to call i violent would perhaps be nearer to the mark."

- Natasha Scharf | Classic Rock Magazine

"My Ruin has to be the best kept secret in the rock world, and their newest release 'The Horror Of Beauty' is an absolute masterpiece. Tairrie B has one of the best vocal ranges in the business, as many critics have stated she puts so many men to shame with her gut-wrenching vocals. She is in a word, awesome! With tracks like 'Made To Measure', 'Burn The Witch' and PJ Harvey cover 'Rid Of Me' she showcases her lyrical arrangements and her outstanding vocal abilities with axe master Mick Murphy ripping the cords that send shivers up and down your spine."

- Maximum Rock

"My Ruin are back and this time it's personal. This album details every emotion that the band have been through over the last couple of years. It's raw, it's angry and it's taking no prisoners. Thereason the bulk of the female fans love them so much is due to the fact that Tairrie B isn't scared to speak her mind. This message couldn't be clearer then in 'Made To Measure', 'Weightless' and 'Get Pretty' - songs that scream female empowerment and tells anyone who doesn't like it to fuck off. But it;s a blessing that we have this album at all. If it was up to the band's last label, Spitfire - we wouldn't have a track of the same name. My Ruin make it very clear their disgust and anger at them and don't hold back. This continues with 'Radio Silence'. dealing with the lack of support they've had to deal with over the years and those people who have tried to write them off. This is My Ruin being exactly how they want to be and doing things their way by their rules. And it rocks. The sound of this album is very organic in the sense that it doesn't try to be anything other than what it is. An out and out rock record that's raw and powerful, going back to how music used to be. No fancy loops or samples and it's the best things you'll hear in a long time. Thank God for My Ruin."

- Faye Wigham | Black Velvet Magazine

"This is an album with many messages and they are all loud and clear. 'One size does not fit all' and 'beauty is in the heart of the believer' are just a couple. This is a positive dialogue that simply shouts out to the listener that they intrinsically need to do just one thing, believe in themselves. Let's face it, this is a genre that installs a feeling of self-hatred. Rather than urging you to slash yourself up or make a goo-looking corpse, it is all very refreshing to get a different take on things. Another message is that the pen (or in this case the voice) is mightier than the sword. anybody who hears 'Spitfire' and reads between the lines will discover how they treated My Ruin and will be pretty damn shocked. Any bands considering signing to that record label would be crazy to do so after this. So in other words, job well and truly done. 'The Horror of Beauty' is massively FAT. Fat in riffs that is, and obese in rocking songs. 14 tracks of crunchy punk and stoner-fuelled blues are what you get. The opening fuzz laden bars of 'Stage Fright' furrow headlong into single 'Made To Measure' which is one of the most ballsy rock outs I have heard in a long time. 'American Psycho' has the anger building up but is interspersed by effective and even chilling spoken word passages. You only need to hear 'Spitfire' once and will be hanging on the words 'fuck your label' every future listen. 'Burn The Witch' has things simmering with a sludgy groove and mesmerizing vibe. I can't listen to this without thinking of Barbara Steele in Mario Bava's Mask Of Satan, which drenches this in a film noir hue for me.
'Radio Silence' divulges into a frenzy of riotous guitar playing and 'Hot In The House Of God' blasts with downright spiteful sentiment. There ain't no fillers, they're all damn killers. The only thing that's 'Weightless' is the song title itself. This is an impressive album that tips the scales at every twist and turn. The 6 1/2 minute 'Bravenet' unfolds like a spoken story and illustrates the fact that Tairrie B definitely has a great book inside her waiting to be written. With a parting shot and PJ Harvey cover of 'Rid Of Me' the message is enforced."

- Pete | Live 4 Metal

"More street ready aggro-metal from Tairrie B's hate machine. We might be back in the same dark manhole, but we surely should not be complaining. Scything riffage, paint curdling vocals and balled fists for melodies are what it's all about in the confrontational world of My Ruin. After a few years away, this latest offering finds them honed and ready to engage in action. Tairrie B has been at the preface for several years now, and in that time she has never deviated from her chosen path. 'The Horror of Beauty' is unsurprisingly as good as anything she has ever done. At their best on hard driving social tirades 'Nazimova', 'radio Silence' and 'Weightless', there's little point in criticizing My Ruin for repeating the same formula when they do it to so much heart-stopping effect. Aural abuse with a conscious - long may it continue."

- Steve Beebee | Kerrang!

"My Ruin clearly excels for two reasons which are well-written, guitar-driven anthems and a kick ass female vocalist with lots of nasty, wicked attitude and tone. The guitar tone is thick, the riffs simple yet catchy and those solos recall those sweet solos of yesteryear's hard rock. The lyrics are dark and confrontational and front-she-devil, Tairrie B has hat incredible ability to dress them up with both a dark, spoken tone and evil scream when needed. As far as female vocals in metal go, she is among the elite and her power rivals that of most men. Co production was handled by guitarist Mick Murphy, Todd Osenbaugh & Nick Raskulinecz and is absolutely stellar. I don't hesitate to recommend this CD for fans that like the style. The trouble is, My Ruin is quite original within their genre so it will come down to personal taste. I recall the feeling of thrill and aggression the first time I heard bands like White Zombie, Godsmack & Slipknot and while My Ruin sound nothing like those bands, it's a similar feeling that they conjure up."

- The Metal Observer

"Few people, if any are aware of My Ruin frontwoman Tairrie B's humble beginnings as a gangsta rapper affiliated with the late N.W.A. founder Eazy-E but we're not 'outing' Miss B; she isn't ashamed of her past. That type of balls-out honesty translates in My Ruin's music on 'The Horror Of Beauty'. My Ruin walks the razors edge between subversive femininity and pro womanhood and 'The Horror Of Beauty' is the most dirt encrusted rock Miss B, has ever attempted, as it commences with a sludgy, Southern riff that would make Down smile in approval, then launches into a punk-sludge hybrid not unlike Motorhead. The divine Miss B throws a big middle finger to sugar 'n' spice on 'Made To Measure', 'Get Pretty' and 'Spitfire'!"

- CMJ New Music Report

"My Ruin are the final nail in the coffin for pop-metal. Their new record 'The Horror Of Beauty' is the album the metal scene needs and deserves. Don't go into this expecting My Ruin to deliver anything other than the musical equivalent to them ramming two middle fingers right in your fucking face because you'll be sorely disappointed. From the gut-churning, rock 'n' roll rifferama of Mick Murphy, to the thumping rhythm section of Yael & Meghan, the trio provide the perfect backbone for Tairrie B's furious sermons. Each lesson in spite from the crushing 'Burn The Witch' to the breakneck 'Nazimova' sees Miss B unleashing the sort of brutal, throat-shredding performance that would shrivel the testicles of even the hardest male 'screamer'. Having said that, there is more to Tairrie B and My Ruin that just unbridled fury as the haunting, spoken word sections in 'Bravenet' reveal. Quite simply, the music industry needs role models like Tairrie B and My Ruin more than they'll ever know."

-Graham Finney | Rock Sound

"Yeah, I know I plugged My Ruin when they fired off their 45 caliber 'The Shape Of Things To Come' EP a couple months ago, but now that things have come in the shape of the new full-length album 'The Horror Of Beauty', well...it's one of the heaviest and just plain best metal albums in years. So what am I gonna do zip my lips? It has a variety and pace. It has passion. It steals from Sabbath in ways other thieves only wish they had the chops for.
These are the only four hellions (three women, one dude) who can plant one foot in the bronto-riff past and one in the scorch throated present, and just stand there waving their middle fingers."

- Greg Burk | LA Weekly

"The Horror of Beauty (2003) is a grander indictment of objectification and, in particular, the impossible ideals for women set by the patriarchal mass media. And, it rocks! My Ruin - 03 In the awesome “Made To Measure” Tairrie B offers advice to the women who don’t fit the type: “You don’t have to be sorry / You don’t have to be saved / You just need to be proud / Of the body that God gave.” And, in “Get Pretty”, she mocks the ones who buy into it: “Get pretty, plastic parts not included / Get pretty, get pretty / Silicone sold separately.” In “Weightless”, she rages at the oppressors: “Insincerity, insecurity, no integrity / There’s no purity / I will not apologize for scaring you / You are everything wrong with America.” But, she knows exactly who’s to blame. In “Ten Minutes to Hollywood”, she says: “Tell us lies, we believe you / Close your eyes, we won’t see you / Take our lives, if you need to / Suck us dry, let us feed you.” Other cool tracks are “Burn the Witch”, “Radio Silence” and “Rid of Me”. And, “Stage Fright” is a cool but short Black Sabbath-esque instrumental that opens the album."

- Rock Chicks Rule

"Dude, what's bubbling out of my speakers? Deep guitars with massive riffs that have their origins in the 70s. Plus rough singing, grating and evil. And female, like ¾ of the line-up of My Ruin, the band around singer Tairrie B, former frontwoman of Manhole / Tura Satana. A kick in the ass of metal-heavy rock music, the term “stoner metal” would be apt. Back in 1999, Tairrie B created the debut “Speak & Destroy” with a few friends and musicians, a mixture of heavy metal and spoken words. A second album was released in 2000, followed by a live album from the sold-out UK tour. The Americans, My Ruin already have a few notches on their belt - because the music has something infernal about it, just like you can find in black metal. Nevertheless, the current album is a sod-deep, doom-thrashy hard rock release, which is accompanied by a female devil singing/screaming. My Ruin rock so freshly and powerfully on "The Horror Of Beauty" (Century Media). The raw sound does the rest to give this album an explosiveness that you rarely hear. Brutal yes, uncontrollably no - as the front woman's previous bands were so often accused of. She sounds variable vocally today, varied and dark like everything about this work. - Great & cinematic!"

- Burn Yours Ears | Germany

"Former Tura Satana/Manhole frontwoman Tairrie B has been on the road with her project My Ruin for a few years now. She started it as a solo project and developed into a solid band structure, which of course was reflected musically. My Ruin are more focused than ever with their new album 'The Horror Of Beauty'. The industrial excursions and spoken word contributions were shelved. Instead, they let it rock almost constantly, and really hard. You take classic Black Sabbath riffs as a foundation, let it groove a little more modernly here, doom a little darker there and add a lot of snot rock attitude on top (listen to 'Made To Measure' in this regard). Add to that Tairrie B's vocals, which you can't even get a hint of melody from, and you get a pretty coherent, ass-kicking doom rock metal sound. Tairrie's vocal style with the sharp screams and spoken words are skillful, but of course not for everyone (and certainly intended). At least the sexy, breathy words, like on the more subdued bouncer 'Rid Of Me' or the heavy doom reels 'Burn The Witch' and 'Bravenet', offer the necessary counterpoint. In addition, the tight and flexible band around Tairrie, especially guitarist Mick Murphy, who comes up with a few cool sludge metal parts and Pantera-esque riffs, is able to compensate. Conclusion: Definitely the best thing My Ruin have achieved so far. Thumbs up."

- Metal.de | Germany

"Tairrie B. is one pissed-off person. Her lyrics are far from subtle ('misogynistic…chauvinistic…small man, big mouth” on 'Spitfire') and are filled with rage and anger. The musicianship behind Tairrie B.’s vocals is impressive. Guitarist Mick Murphy was obviously schooled in the rock of the 1970s as his riffs are pure arena rock. The star of My Ruin though is Tairrie B. on vocals. She must have chain-smoked Camels, shot gunned Jack Daniels and gargled Javex to attain the voice she has. Her deep growl is equal parts Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead and Morgan Lander from Kittie. Pretty it ain’t but it suits the lyrics and music perfectly. The real standout tracks on 'The Horror Of Beauty' are 'Made To Measure', “Burn The Witch” and 'Hot In The House Of God'. 'M2M' is catchy as hell and features some pretty telling lyrics about a dust-up she had with a critic from Metal Hammer Magazine and the ideal image of women in general. 'Burn The Witch' has a cool, down tuned guitar and fuzzed-out bass line that really grabbed me. 'Hot In The House Of God' features a great vocal delivery and a killer intro. My Ruin is unable to be classified within a specific genre. They are punk. They are metal. They are hardcore. They are rock. In other words, many different influences come out in their music. Parallels have been drawn between My Ruin and Kittie but in all fairness, they were doing this while Kittie was still learning to play their instruments. If rage and vitriol are what you crave, 'The Horror Of Beauty' will satisfy your hunger."

- Metal-Rules

" Rapper-turned-groove metaller Tairrie B. was an underground style icon of the nu-metal period, but her band My Ruin was always two steps too hard for rock radio. That said, 'Hot In The House of God' is proof that she deserved plenty of respect in sludge and stoner circles. The track starts with a cinder block riff and never lets up pounding the crap out of the listener. A sweaty, ugly headbanging anthem if there ever was one."
