Ukrainian Village Music: Historic Recordings 1928-1933

Immigrants from Ukraine began arriving in the United States in the 1880s. Many settled in the Mid-Atlantic states of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, finding work in factories and coal mines. This collection of traditional Ukrainian folk music, which spans the spectrum from melancholy to joyful, was recorded between 1928 and 1933 in New York City and Camden, NJ. The rise of the Ukrainian American middle class slowed the spread and performance of their unique folk music. Musicologist Richard K. Spottswood selected the music and wrote the liner notes.
