Roll the Old Chariot
~ Song
Annotation
This is a traditional sea chantey (or shanty), used as a stamp-and-go (or walkaway or runaway) chantey, according to Stan Hugill. The tune is an African-American spiritual, or Doerflinger says it is a Salvation Army revivalist hymn to the tune of a Scottish reel. The words are a mix of English naval and maritime life and spiritual themes, depending on which versions are being sung.
