דברי הקדמה של גיל אלדמע

בסוף שנת 1960 התחלתי לעבוד בקול ישראל כעורך תכניות זמר עברי וכמעבד מוסיקלי. באותם ימים היתה תקליטיית קול ישראל דלה מאד בהקלטות מקוריות של זמר עברי, שירים רבים מתקופת העליות הראשונות ובכלל - מהתקופה שלפני הקמת המדינה, שירים ששרנו בגן הילדים, בבית הספר ובתנועות הנוער וכן שירי חגים לילדים ולמבוגרים שלא נשמעו ברדיו כי לא היו להם הקלטות סבירות.
עמיתי לעבודה, אשר מאוחר יותר התמנה למנהל המחלקה למוסיקה עממית - חנוך חסון - יזם הקלטות של שירים עבריים בהרכבים מוסיקליים שונים. הוא רתם ל"עגלת העשייה" את טובי המעבדים כגון נעם שריף, יחזקאל בראון, צבי אבי, שמעון כהן ועוד והשירים המוקלטים מחדש החלו להישמע ברדיו.
חנוך הציע אז כי נקים חבורת זמר של קול ישראל אשר תקליט שירים שלא היו קיימים בתקליטייה ואני לקחתי על עצמי את המשימה. בחרנו את משתתפי החבורה מתוך חברי מקהלת "רינת" (בה חנוך ואני היינו חברים) בניצוחו של גארי ברתיני.
הזמרים ידעו לקרוא ולשיר מתוך תוים, דבר שהקל מאד על ביצוע העיבודים הקוליים שהכנתי. קראנו לחבורה הזאת חבורת "רננים" והתחלנו לרנן. שרנו והקלטנו משיריהם של דוד זהבי, מתתיהו שלם, נחום נרדי, דניאל סמבורסקי, מרדכי זעירא, עמנואל עמירן ועוד ועוד. מבחר ראשון מתוך השירים שהקלטנו נמצא באוסף זה.
חבורת "רננים" החלה לפעול בשנת 1962 ובנוסף להקלטות אולפן רבות שעשינו השתתפנו גם במופעים פומביים של קול ישראל - כך גאלנו שירים רבים אשר היו עלולים להישאר עלומים.
במשך השנים השתתפה החבורה במופעים שונים ברחבי הארץ ושרה גם מעיבודיהם של מוסיקאים אחרים ולסיכום - אין ספק כי חבורת "רננים" רשמה פרק משמעותי בתולדות הזמר בכלל ובתולדות הקלטות הזמר העברי בפרט.
